From Moscow, Russia where he was on a state visit, President Rodrigo Duterte received reports on the terrorist attacks by the Maute Group in Marawi City on May 23. On the same day, the President declared martial law in the entire Mindanao. Social media was abuzz with the news and the nation was divided in its opinion about ML.

Twitter netizens bravely expressed their dismay and apprehension over ML, bringing back to the fore the ghastly memories of martial law in the country.

But on Saturday, May 27, Senator JV Ejercito tweeted about how “constitutionalists and security and defense experts” have become rampant in the Philippines.

This tweet was followed by Sen. Sonny Angara’s remark saying that the Philippines is “A nation of armchair experts.” Uh-oh.

Of course, netizens can’t fathom the fact that they would be reading these tweets from senators. Here are some of the winning tweets that we’ve seen:

Senator Ejercito reacted to the tweets from the netizens by saying: “Huwaw! Di ata na gets, ang ibig sabihin ko ay ang daming lumalabas sa mga interviews na “experts”. Have always encouraged crowd sourcing.”

We leave it to our senators to do their jobs in coming up with the country’s laws. But tbh, this job also includes listening to the public’s pulse and taking into consideration every tweet, post, and reaction from netizens. Social media is the avenue where free opinion flows. Let it flow.
