Good news, everyone!
Last June 12, Monday, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) together with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has activated its free public Wi-Fi connection along EDSA. Yay!
The first phase of the project covers all 13 stations of the MRT from North Avenue station in Quezon City to Taft Avenue station in Pasay City and has started its operations during the 119th Independence Day celebration.
The EDSA Wi-Fi project is in collaboration with Globe Telecom Inc. and Smart Communications Inc. DICT explained that there are currently two ID networks for the free internet service: “FREE EDSA wifi” and “Juan Konek.”
The “Juan Konek” network will have a daily data cap of 100 megabits for every user. Meanwhile, Globe and Smart, guarantee high-speed internet with a total capacity of 1 gb per second but users will be able to get only 30 minutes free each day. Additional internet use will be charged.
Commuters can also enjoy the free public WiFi while travelling from Cubao to Guadalupe.
According to DICT Secretary Rodolfo A. Salalima, the project will benefit a lot of commuters along the busy roads of EDSA.
“We work to give Filipinos access to the information and technology that they need in their daily lives. EDSA Wi-Fi will benefit the hundreds of thousands of commuters along EDSA daily,” said DICT Secretary Rodolfo A. Salalima.
The second phase of the project will cover EDSA from Cubao to North Avenue, and from Guadalupe to Taft Avenue. This stage is expected to finish before President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address in July.
While the third and last phase will be covering the entire stretch of EDSA. By August this year, the government also plans to have a free WiFi service from Mall of Asia to Balintawak.
DICT stressed that private information is secured with the public WiFi and illegal websites are blocked.
