It has been exactly 20 years since Diana, Princess of Wales passed away in a car crash. Many considered the accident as a tragic end to years of torment from her marriage with Charles, Prince of Wales, from the British Royal family and from the public.
But her life and work was never forgotten. To this day, her children, Prince William and Prince Harry continue to carry out her charity work. Princess Diana used her influence to bring light to causes such as meningitis, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, and physical disabilities, among so many others.
More than Diana’s generous heart, it was also her words that touched so many lives. She epitomized strength, grace, intelligence, compassion and wisdom through some of her most memorable quotes while she was still alive. Her words stand strong even today.
Here are 5 pieces of advice Princess Diana probably wants millennials to keep in mind:
1. “If you find someone you love in your life, then hang on to that love.”
This could be anything from a hobby, a job, a career you plan to pursue, or a person. Ayieee! But in all seriousness, Princess Diana found the love of her life – apart from family – in helping others in need, whether it be children, persons with disability, those afflicted with illnesses, athletes, researchers and developers, the list goes on. She was unstoppable in her compassion and that was simply because she loved giving. If you find something or someone (San ba si crush? Char!) you love, hold on to it and treasure it. Keep going and you’ll look back at a life well-lived.
2. “People think that at the end of the day a man is the only answer. Actually, a fulfilling job is better for me.”
“‘Pag okay kayo, inspiring siya pero ‘pag hindi, stressful lang siya,” an anonymous person once said about romantic relationships. Guess what? We think Princess Di feels the same. Prioritize your search for a fulfilling job, one that you will never come to hate or abandon. Men and romance can wait, but your talent and potential cannot. Have the courage to pursue what you want without any man (or anyone) telling you what you can and cannot do.
3. “When you are happy you can forgive a great deal.”
In a world where hate is so rampant (Hi, ka-DDS!), it’s easy to dismiss forgiveness. Have an understanding heart towards you enemies. keep them close not for war tactics (I see you, Sun Tzu) but to truly understand ‘where they are coming from’. Simply put, know what their ‘hugot’ in life is. Of course you can’t do this to every basher you meet online or on the streets, but instead of fighting hate with hate, choose forgiveness (and rational arguments LOL). Do it ‘for they do not know what they are doing’. Share the happiness in your heart and forgive those who made offences against you.
4. “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”
The littlest things as passing on that jeepney fare (everyday commuter: #relate) or giving up that train seat for an elderly is the best thing you could do in a day. Be kind in your actions and words, no matter how difficult it can be. (Believe me. I know.) Exude kindness even when no law requires you. One day, someone, in ways that might surprise you, kindness will be showered.
5. “Only do what your heart tells you.”
But it all boils down to what your heart tells you. Princess Diana, despite the mental and emotional hardship she was going through, chose to give, to love and to be kind. If your heart tells you to pursue your dreams, go for it. If it tells you to set aside distractions, be steadfast with discipline. If it tells you to approach that friend you argued with, do it. If it tells you to be kind and compassionate, do it with love.
We miss you, Princess Di! You’ll forever be the queen of our hearts!
