A painter from Molino, Cavite snagged the top spot of 3D, interactive museum 2017 Art In Island’s Mural Competition.
Challenged with the theme, “Colorful Life,” Franco Matucad bested 9 other teams, coming in solo, duo, or trio, to dominate the tilt and win P20,000 in cash and prizes.

The 28-year-old painted ‘Taingang Kawali’, a cat crowned in leaves and flowers overlooking a deforested land under a massive, blue sky. He said the people are becoming oblivious towards grave damages to the environment.
“‘Yung kalikasan natin patuloy lang na sinisira ng mga tao. Sumisigaw na ‘yung mga puno, ‘yung kalikasan, pero pinagwawalang bahala lang natin,” he explained.
Matucad said he used a creation other than humans, in this case a cat, because he thinks animals are the only ones who still believe in a Creator.
“Lahat ng nararamdaman natin ngayon, konektado ‘yan lahat,” he added.
The mural competition winner, who started painting from a very young age with his mother’s encouragement, dedicated the win to his family, his supportive wife and their unborn child.
“Sobrang masaya ako [sa panalo] kasi gift din dahil magkaka-baby na ko, kaya inisip ko na rin na para talaga sa amin ‘to,” he said.
The event marks the museum’s first ever mural competition, attracting participating teams aged 19 to 35 years old from Ilocos Norte, Baguio, Legaspi, Caloocan, Taytay and Manila.
“Since the paintings inside our museum are all hand-painted by artists, we wanted to take it outside, too,” Graphic Design Department Manager Niña Monique Aliga said.
Meanwhile, the largest 3D, interactive museum in the country has brought yet another groundbreaking offering: the 3D Art + Media Art.
Art in Island combined projection mapping and media facade art, creating beautiful and breathtaking visuals to narrate stories from the Bible’s first book, Genesis. The museum’s 30-feet-tall panoramic 3D paintings come to life in carefully mapped light projections for the most epic 5 minutes museum-goers will ever spend.
Catch the 3D Art + Media Art at the central hall of the museum at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
While waiting for the show, don’t forget to ‘be part of the art’ by creating your own distinctive poses in various zones of the museum: Optical Illusion, Object Art, Fantasy, Religion, Masterpiece, Animal, Aqua, and Love, among others.
