Koreans are known for being meticulous when it comes to skincare. They have 10 steps (yes, 10!) to complete their everyday routine and I’m pretty sure that you’ve seen a lot of Korean products online that K-Drama stars swear by. But before joining the Korean skincare hype, you must know your skin type first.

Here in the Philippines, most of us have oily skin. And when you have oily skin, you shouldn’t just focus on mattifying your skin. You must consider products that are also hydrating, can prevent breakouts, and can minimize enlarged pores.

With that, here are 10 skincare products that you might want to try if you have an oily and acne prone skin. All items are easily available through local drugstores and online shops.

1. Makeup remover

Whether you’re wearing a light makeup during daytime or heavy makeup for a glam party look, a reliable makeup remover is a must. If you’re looking for a mild and alcohol free product that will remove your makeup, you can try using micellar water at the start of your routine. The formula of this product is made of micelles or tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water.

Soak a cotton pad with micellar water, hold the cotton pad over your closed eye for a few seconds and then gently wipe to remove makeup. Continue this step over your entire face until it is completely clean.

2. Cleanser

After removing your makeup, the next step is to wash your face with your favorite facial wash. It took me years to find the perfect facial wash for my oily and acne prone skin, but after trying Human Nature Nourishing Facial Wash, my breakouts lessen. It has tomato extract and mild moisturizers that help soothe skin and keep it soft. It cleans my skin without drying it out so it feels clean and moisturized.

3. Exfoliator

Exfoliating doesn’t need to be part of your everyday routine, but doing it twice a week or every other day could help you achieve a clear skin and as well as remove deep-seated dirt.

The new Apricot Oil Scrub by St. Ives has the nourishing properties of a scrub exfoliant and the gentle moisturizing agents found in oils. Just put a small amount of oil onto dry hands and massage it gently to your skin. Take some warm water while continually massaging the oil into your face. It will emulsify into a milky white substance. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a towel.

4. Toner

If you have an oily skin, you are more prone to breakouts because of excessive sebum production. To prevent this, using a toner after washing your face could help remove excess oil and reduce inflammation.

When it comes to toning, Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Toner is my holy grail product.  This toner has 14% Natural Grain Alcohol and Witch Hazel – a natural astringent that is used to treat swelling, sores, bruises, psoriasis, blisters, insect bites, wounds, and even acne. For best results, use this regularly.

5. Sheet Mask

There’s a lot of sheet masks in the market as it was considered as an important part of every Korean skincare regimen. Recently, I’ve tried using Dermairis Face Mask that has adenosine (anti-wrinkle and has skin restoring benefits) and niacinamide (known for its ability to fade dark spots and reduce hyperpigmentation). After using this sheet mask, you will probably notice that your skin feels smoother and more hydrated.

Just put it on for 15-20 minutes, discard the mask, gently massage the excess product, and proceed with the rest of your skincare regimen. Use at least once or twice a week or every single day if you’d like!

6. Acne Medication

Having a pimple might be really annoying especially when you’re having your period. That’s why acne ointments are here to the rescue.

A cult favorite among skincare fans, the Céleteque Acne Spot Corrector Gel is known as a one-step hack to quickly get rid of annoying acne. It has Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) and Poly Hydroxy Acid (PHA) that aid in exfoliating dead skin cells and help you remove pimples, spots, and other acne imperfections. Just put a small dab on the affected area regularly. It ensures visible results within only one week of application.

7. Serum

Serum is one of the most essential parts of every skincare routine. Although serums are more expensive than any other skincare products, believe it or not, adding this to your regimen will make a big difference.

I’ve been using Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate for almost three weeks and I must say, I’ve already noticed some visible results! My skin looks healthier, more hydrated, and glowing. Apply two to three drops of the night treatment on cleansed skin and gently pat into your skin. A little goes a long way!

8. Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is thin and fragile. That’s why you should treat it really well and with care. Applying eye cream is recommended regardless of your age and skin type.

Mizon’s Snail Repair Eye Cream is packed with 80% snail mucin filtrate, sodium hyaluronate, and niacinamide that speeds up skin regeneration and locks in moisture. It reduced the puffiness of my eyes and really lightened my dark circles!

9. Moisturizer

Having an oily skin is not an excuse to skip moisturizer! You actually need to moisturize to balance your skin’s natural oil and prevent future breakouts.

When it comes to moisturizers, I swear by Céleteque’s Hydration Facial Moisturizer. It is a hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free water-based gel moisturizer that keeps my skin hydrated and nourished without leaving a greasy feeling. It is lightweight and can definitely be used under makeup. Apply twice a day (morning and night) for best results.

10. Sunscreen

If you want to avoid the early signs of aging caused by the sun’s harmful UV rays, your morning skincare routine should include a trustworthy sunscreen. Whether it’s sunny, gloomy, or even rainy outside, you must put it every morning as it decreases the risk of developing skin cancer.

A lot of sunscreens are available on the market, but Bioré UV Perfect Spray is still my fave. Aside from being a fast-drying sunscreen spray, it can be used on both the face and the body. This UV spray is perfect for touching up in the middle of the day. No need to spread on your skin because it dries up instantly.
