Although street performance is not a common sight in the streets of Manila, it’s considered as an effective avenue for artistic expression in other countries like Australia, USA, France, and more.
These street performances or popularly known as busking is done in public places where artists can showcase their music while commuters or passersby can enjoy watching while waiting for a ride, creating a more pleasant city experience.
Last November 27 to 29, the global outdoor brand, Merrell, brought music to the streets of Intramuros, Los Baños, and at the MRT Cubao station for the “Merrell City Busk,” a series of live public street performances featuring artists from the local music scene.
All artists wore the Merrell’s 1SIX8 and AC+ Collection, the brand’s urban lifestyle shoes that will let you explore the city comfortably. Full proceeds from Merrell City Busk live performances went to non-profit organizations personally selected by the artists: CARA Welfare, Hero Foundation, and White Cross.
Kicking off the first leg of the City Busk at Plaza Roma in Intramuros was Sponge Cola. The crowd enjoyed singing along with their hit singles such as “Jeepney” and “Tuliro.” The kids from White Cross, Spongecola’s chosen charity, are also present at the event.
“We’re playing in the middle of the city with people and it’s kind of cool. It’s more of an intimate gathering where we can play music and we can celebrate being in a nice city and hang out,” Yael said.
Other artists that day are Brisom, Kai Atienza, and LJ Manzano.
Meanwhile, Ebe Dancel headlined the second leg of the Merrell City Busk in his hometown in Los Baños, Laguna. He played alongside new artists from Los Baños such as Save Alex Movement, Lea and Lorns, and Jen Rogers.
Aia de Leon graced the last leg of the Merrell City Busk was held at one of the busiest train stations in the metro, MRT Cubao. This is also the singer’s first time to busk!
“I think it’s my first time to busk ever and I’m really happy that I did it. It’s been a long time since I’ve done something as random as this – this intimate in the afternoon,” de Leon said.
Michael Llave, SaxSerenade, and Zsaris also perfomed at the event.
