It’s that time of the year again where everyone’s busy shopping for gifts, preparing for Noche Buena menu, and holiday parties are in full swing. And, because Christmas gatherings and reunions are everywhere, we’re pretty sure you’ll need some stress-free guide in creating an elegant look for the season.

We got the chance to interview Yuki Tansengco, a style blogger and entrepreneur who loves to share her style hacks and travel tips through her blog The Style Cat. Here, she gives us her do’s and don’ts to styling, her favorite color combinations, and some of her go-to outfits to for pegs this holiday season:

1. It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed.

For the upcoming holiday parties or reunions, Yuki said that it is better to arrive overdressed than underdressed, but don’t wear something that you’re not comfortable in. If you’re unsure about the dress code, research on the venue and see what level of “dressy-ness” it is.

Yuki’s suggestion: “Always be gracious to ask and respect the dress code of the host and don’t wear something uncomfortable (it will make you socialize less!). To be safe — I go in an all-black attire.”

2. Wear comfortable shoes.

Skip the hassle of wearing shoes like stilettos or pumps if you’re not really comfortable wearing them. According to Yuki, mules, flats, or block-heeled shoes are your best bets for an elegant yet comfy look. After all, what you really need is something comfortable with all the walking and standing around during a party, right?

Yuki’s suggestion: “I stand 5’7 feet tall so I personally choose to skip the heels whenever I can. A great option is classic mules, embellished flats or a block-heeled pair that creates slight elevation but still super comfortable.”

3. Mix and match

Finding a balance in mixing and matching is a must. Don’t be afraid to try something new when assembling an outfit.

Yuki’s suggestion: “Feel free to browse fashion blogs or runway trends to see what the latest is — no need to follow the outfit exactly, but just get an idea in terms of style and color combinations. I love layering and partnering contrasting color combinations.”

4. Don’t be afraid to have a pop of color to your look

Some are afraid to combine opposite colors to their outfit because they’re worried for the outcome of the final look.

Yuki’s suggestion: “I have three go-to color combinations: I love going monochromatic, which is choosing one color and just wearing similar hues (ex. violet & lilac), I love to go complementary colors, which are two opposite colors on the color wheel (such as blue/red or yellow/blue), or a pop of color paired with a neutral or khakis.”

 5. Pair the right accessories to your outfit

Adding a jewelry is a perfect way to bring life to an outfit and enhance its best features. Complete your look with a pair of statement earrings or a necklace. Just remember that less is more when it comes to accessories.

Yuki’s suggestion: “I just always highlight one part. If I’m wearing statement earrings, I leave out the necklace. If you’re going on a holiday somewhere tropical, these cute basket bags from Style Cat are perfect. If its an evening party, definitely match it with a cute clutch or sling.”
