It’s the end of another week at work or school. It’s time to tie your hair up in a messy bun, put your PJs on, and recharge for another intense week of meeting deadlines and pulling all-nighters. There’s no better way to chill than with the company of pizza — with extra cheese — and some good music.
If we’re talking about good ones, though, we have the past week to turn to as the world bore witness to new single and album releases from our favorite artists.
Looking for tracks perfect for the weekend chill? Here are some songs you can play on loop this weekend:
1. “My, My, My!” by Troye Sivan
Nearly three years after the release of his youthful and dreamy debut album, “Blue Neighborhood,” the 22-year-old Australian singer, songwriter, actor, and Youtube personality has released new music for us to bask on. Let his coffee-and-cream baritone take you on a breathtaking electro-pop and EDM-tinged sound trip.
2. “IDGAF” by Dua Lipa
If you’ve been wanting to let off some steam over some school or work matter, we think you can make way for Dua Lipa’s new rule, at least for this weekend: Just say, “IDGAF.” A follow-up to her hit single New Rules, IDGAF is the 22-year-old, English singer-songwriter’s new anthem for self-love. The empowered woman is finally putting herself over her toxic partner, as embodied by the song’s crisp and almost militaristic drums as well as Lipa’s most cutting lyrics yet.
3. “Never Be The Same” by Camila Cabello
Former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello has taken us to Havana (oh na na) for seven straight weeks at the Billboard Top 100 and it looks like she’s not going anywhere far from the top. The 20-year-old Cuban-American singer and songwriter debuted a new single called “Never Be The Same” on the same day her highly-anticipated and self-titled debut album was released. The song features her distinctive vocals and an earworm-worthy chorus over sputtering glitz-pop and droning synths. We can already imagine feeling oh la la while listening to this song repeatedly.
4. “End Game” by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran
When Taylor Swift’s current edgy sound, Future’s bars rapped in choppy, double-time flow, and Eminem-influenced Ed Sheeran come together, we’re bound to get a power-pop anthem sustained by shuffling drums and hybridized sounds of rap and R&B. The song’s overall sound, with all its half-rapped cadences, have as much attitude as Lipa’s IDGAF except Tay-Tay already said it’s the “End Game”.
5. Bonus: “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion
Okay. We know this is not a new release but with news of Celine Dion coming to Manila this July for a concert, we just had to include this. For the first time ever, the Grammy award-winner will be singing her best hits including My Heart Will Go On, The Power of Love, and Because You Loved Me, among others, in front of delighted Filipino fans. She was slated to perform here in Manila last 2014 but had to cancel to care for her sick husband. This song will surely urge you to watch Titanic for the 100th time and bawl your eyes out for Rose and Jack (who could’ve survived, too, if he was given even just a little bit more space on that piece of driftwood).
