Almost 15 years after its first theater adaptation, The Sandbox Collective and 9 Works Theatrical will bring back Himala to the stage!
Based on the award-winning film penned by Ricky Lee, Himala tells the story of Elsa, a young girl who claims to have the power of healing after seeing a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. News of her miracles spread far and wide, drawing the ill and the curious to what was once the sleepy town of Cupang.
Ed Lacson, stage director of the 2018 stage adaptation, said that although we might’ve seen Himala as a film about religion, the musical is not a religious, nor a political play.
“I think the politics will come from whoever watches it. The politics is on you deciding whether these characters are to be judged or not to be judged,” Lacson said.
Known for her character in the hit musical Rak of Aegis, Aicelle Santos is now ready to take the iconic role of Elsa in the musical. When asked about what she feels about following the steps of Nora Aunor and May Bayot as Elsa, Santos said that it is the hardest role she’ll ever play in her lifetime.
“I got excited but at the same time scared. It’s big shoes to fill,” Santos added.
Joining the cast are Kakki Teodoro as the former prostitute Nimia, Neomi Gonzales as Elsa’s childhood friend Chayong, Sandino Martin as Chayong’s former lover Pilo, David Ezra as Orly the filmmaker, Bituin Escalante as Nanay Saling, and many more.
With book and lyrics by Ricky Lee, and music and lyrics by Vince De Jesus, with direction and set design by Ed Lacson Jr. Himala: Isang Musikal is set to stage on February 10 to March 4 at the Power MAC Center Spotlight, Circuit Makati 4.
