Valentine’s Day and that romantic date of yours with lé bae (or yourself – we don’t judge) is less than two weeks away. This calls for the perfect dress, the perfect shoe, and yes, great skin. You’ve probably already heard this like a broken record, but we’ll repeat it again: Skincare is the key to great skin and flawless makeup.

If you’ve been stressing out over skin issues as of late, though, fret not. Hope is not lost. You can still achieve that valentine vixen or sweetheart makeup look with the help of a few products and a consistent skincare routine. “Leading up to a special occasion, you might want to address certain skin issues that are bothering you such as acne, dullness or texture first,” the team behind beauty, cosmetics, and personal care shop Skincare Curator told MB Life after we met them at the recently-concluded GlamCon MNL 2018.

Looking for products that can help you achieve better skin by Valentine’s Day? Here are some recommendations from our friends at the Skincare Curator:

Whether you just woke up from a good night’s sleep or just got home from a long day of work, cleansing is an important step in a skincare routine. It’s the whole point of it! Make sure to choose a cleanser that does the job does not leave the skin feeling dry.

The Skincare Curator suggests:

Cosrx Low PH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, P540
  • Cosrx Low PH Good Morning Gel Cleanser – a deep facial cleanser and gentle exfoliator in one. It has BHA and tea tree oil that improves skin texture and complexion
Neogen Real Fresh Foam in Green Tea, P800 on sale
  • Neogen’s Real Fresh Foam in Green Tea – a gentle cleanser that contains real fermented green tea leaves that moisturizes and refreshes while effectively exfoliating. It has skin-calming ingredients like aloe, too.

Exfoliating is that extra step of cleansing that everyone needs, especially for those with dull and textured skin. By removing that dirty top layer, exfoliation allows the skin to absorb the benefits of other products better. You can do this the night before the big day, too. Be careful not to overdo this step, though, as it should only be done once or twice a week. Instead of removing dead skin cells, you might end up damaging your skin for good.

The Skincare Curator suggests

Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Pads in Lemon, P1,000
  • Neogen Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Pads in Lemon – pre-soaked pads that have a pure cotton mesh gauze side for exfoliation of dead skin and an embossed side that removes remaining impurities. Lemon is also loaded with Vitamin C and nutrients that result to visibly clearer and brighter skin.
Neogen Bio Fresh Mask With Real Calming Herbs, P1,150 on sale
  • Neogen Bio Fresh Mask with Real Calming Herbs – a clay mask that contains hand-crushed herbs that can gently peel away trapped impurities as well as soothe irritations.

We’ve been rambling so much about cleansing but we’re not stopping. Applying toner is the last step to cleansing and picks up whatever you might have missed early in the routine. It delivers a quick hit of hydration and also acts like a primer for the rest of the products in your routine.

The Skincare Curator suggests:

Cosrx AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner, P657 on sale
  • Cosrx AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner –  prevents whiteheads, blackheads, and blemishes with a blend of all-natural ingredients and mineral water to rejuvenate and replenish skin, perfect for acne-prone skin

  • Pyunkang Yul Mist Toner – a hypoallergenic, water-type toner that contains 91.9% Barberry root extract that soothes the skin, perfect for dry or sensitive skin

  • Hada Labo Gokujun Hyaluronic Lotion Smooth Light – a lightweight toner that refreshes, tones and refines rough skin texture to create matte and silky finish that’s also perfect for acne-prone skin

Serums are lighter than moisturizers and contain high concentrations of active ingredients that can treat any skincare grievance imaginable: dryness, dullness, spots, or wrinkles. “It also helps in stimulating collagen production,” the Skincare Curator team said. These are completely optional but if you choose to include this in your routine, you won’t regret the results. For your upcoming date, bright and glowing skin would be perfect.

The Skincare Curator suggests:

Tia’m My Signature C Source, P850
  • Tia’m My Signature C Source – a Vitamin C serum that helps in regenerating an firming the skin as well as brightening and balancing the skin tone. Don’t forget to put sunblock when used during the day and store the product in the fridge to keep it fresh.

Moisturizing is another key part of the skincare routine. Not only does it provide your daily dose of hydration, it also helps lock in the benefits of your toner and serum. It’s especially important for upcoming special events. “By focusing on moisturization, you will have a better chance of an even layer of makeup with less texture,” the team explained. NOTE: The team swears by using both products at night prior to the big day.

The Skincare Curator suggests:

Cosrx Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream, P990 on sale
  • Cosrx Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream – a cream that contains snail secretion filtrate that supplies rich moisturization to the skin. It prevents skin troubles and maintains skin suppleness with collagen.

Spot Treatment

Clearer skin on Valentine’s Day means facing head to head with acne spots. In whatever point of your skincare routine, you can use products that can help combat stubborn acne spots and blemishes.

For acne they might want to try spot treatments such as the Cosrx BHA A-sol dabbed only in areas where u are breaking out, the cosrx centella blemish cream is also great if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding since it is safe for them, the tiam spot remover is also great since it is an all in one treatment as well.

The Skincare Curator suggests:

Cosrx Natural BHA Skin Returning A-sol, P774 on sale

Just a reminder from the Skincare Curator team, though. You might want to think carefully about using products with active ingredients such as BHA, AHA, PHA, and Vitamin C, especially when you’ve never tried them before. “You do not know how your skin will react pa, especially with a special event coming up in a week,” the team said. Consulting a dermatologist for major skin issues is highly-recommended by the team “as they always know better.”
