Love teams have always been the staple of Philippine showbiz. A good love team is a surefire formula for success, both on the big and small screen.
At any point in our lives, we’ve gone cray-cray over a love team whose chemistry was so electric and so romantic, we wished our own love lives had the same happy ending. While others argue that love teams are too good to be true, all those slow, magical, bright pink moments somehow attract loyal fans who support the pair all the way.
Over the years, the Philippine entertainment industry has given birth to some of the most phenomenal love teams that exemplified many fans’ #relationshipgoals (ours included). Whatever movie, television drama, or music album these pairs work on, their supporters always seem to be floored. We know you already a few love teams in mind but here — in our opinion — are 14 of the most iconic Filipino love teams of the century:
1. Susan Roces and Fernando Poe Jr.
If we’re to have a reel-to-real #couplegoals, it’s Susan Roces and Fernando Poe Jr. While many doubted the union of the “King and Queen of Philippine Movies” back in the day, their relationship lasted for so many years. The video of their iconic 1968 wedding was digitally restored just last year, is a reminder to people of their enduring love.
2. Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III
Tirso Cruz III was the typical movie star back in the 1960s. He was tall, mestizo, and outright handsome. Nora Aunor, on the other hand, was the opposite of popular actresses at the time. She was short and dark. The unconventional pairing (a.k.a. relatability), however, propelled them to box-office success. They were in an on-and-off relationship, too, which drove fans wild. In the end, the two remained each other’s better half of the phenomenal love team. Nora married actor Christopher de Leon while Tirso married ramp model Lynn Ynchausti-Cruz.
3. Vilma Santos and Edgar Mortiz
Vi and Bobot, as the love team of Vilma Santos and Edgar Mortiz was fondly called, dominated the ’70s. Their box office hits (you might want to ask your parents in detail about this) include their team-up’s debut movie, “Young Love,” “The Young Idols,” “Sweethearts,” “Sixtmarpopeen,” and “My Pledge of Love.” They were off-screen partners, too! As most love teams, however, they went on their separate ways. Bobot is now married to Millette Santos, while Vilma is now married to Senator Ralph Recto.
4. Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion
Apart from working together in massively successful movies such as “Tayong Dalawa,” they were also real-life lovers and married for three years. Today, we have McDonald’s to thank for in waking up the Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion fan in us. Their “Kamusta ka?” commercial was their first reunion after 26 years. Oh, what nostalgia! A viral Facebook thread also circulated online due to the commercial about Sharon’s whirlwind of a love life and how Gabby was her “first real love.” *squeals*
5. Sheryll Cruz and Romnick Sarmenta
Sheryll Cruz and Romnick Sarmienta’s love team was a hit from 1988 to 1992 and were first paired up in a youth-oriented show, “That’s Entertainment.” They had the chemistry, most likely because they fell in love in real life. Sadly, the two eventually broke up, with a much-requested reconciliation happening only on TV.
6. Dawn Zulueta and Richard Gutierrez
Dubbed as the eternal love team of all time, Richard Gutierrez and Dawn Zulueta’s pairing first rose to fame in the ’90s movie, “Hihintayin Kita Sa Langit,” and that iconic scene where they are seen together in the afterlife. When they became a real-life couple, fans became even more ecstatic. They were one of the most sought-after tandems in their heyday, but they proved to be just as swoon-worthy in their reunion series, “Walang Hanggan.”
7. Angelu de Leon and Bobby Andrews
Watching T.G.I.S. was the ultimate weekend tambayan on television for teens and no other pair in that show clicked as much as Bobby and Angelu. The way Wacks and Peachy dealt with relationship issues was so real, and therefore, so relatable.
8. Lea Salonga and Aga Muhlach

Lea Salonga and Aga Muhlach were phenomenal not only for their “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal” team-up but also because of what happened behind the camera. In a recently-discovered love letter, Aga said Lea was his “TOTGA” or “the one that got away.” He goes on to credit Lea who “resurrected my career.” “Lea, bakit labis kitang mahal? It’s because you are, and always have been, so real. Walang kaplastikan. Walang arte. Walang drama. Pinakita mo sa akin ang totoong pagkatao mo. You are the real thing,” he wrote. Lea and Aga could have been the real thing, too!
9. Claudine Barreto and Rico Yan
Claudine Barretto and Rico Yan’s love team was the most popular in the late ’90s, where they starred in multiple hit series and movies. The two eventually became a couple in real life and celebrated their fourth anniversary March of 2002. In a tragic turn of events, however, Rico passed away just weeks following the celebration due to acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis. While rumors left fans asking all these years, Claudine chose to remember Rico through the love letters he gave her.
10. Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin
Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin’s mass appeal was comparable to that of Maricel Soriano and Albert Martinez back in the ’80s. They were real, natural, very casual, and very babes (if you know what we mean). They first appeared in the hit show, “Gimik,” and went on to work in “F.L.A.M.E.S. The Movie,” “Kung Ayaw Mo Huwag Mo,” “Labs Kita, Ok Ka Lang,” “Hey babe,” and “Labs Ko si Babes.” They had an off-screen romantic relationship, too, but it was short-lived.
11. Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa
The Echo-Tin love team was adored by many fans primarily because they were talented actors and a gorgeous pair. So many supporters “shipped” the two so persistently that eventually led to an off-screen relationship. The “kilig factor” went off the charts for all their small screen and big screen projects. The fans continued to shower the tandem with love even after they parted ways.
12. Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz
Who would forget all the feels that Popoy and Basha brought us? Their hit movie, “One More Chance,” not only showcased their excellent acting skills, it also provided us with all the feels that many fans still use to this day for that meme or hugot. Their famous lines, “Mahal na mahal kita at ang sakit-sakit na,””Hanggang ngayon umaasa ako na sasabihin mo na ako pa rin, na ako na lang. Ako na lang ulit,” and “She loved me at my worst. You had me at my best and you chose to break my heart,” will continue to remind us of John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo’s best movie as a tandem over and over again.
13. Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes
The Dong-Yan love team started in the television show, “Marimar”. Their small-screen chemistry sparked rumors that one is falling in love with the other. Here comes the controversial plot twist, though: both Marian and Dingdong were involved with someone else. The two denied their feelings for each other back then but by now, the only memory we have of them is their nationally-televised grand wedding… and their cute baby.
14. Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s impossible to not know the tandem of Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards. They’re like the Guy and Pip of this generation. Alden was a budding actor and a boy-next-door while Maine is the funny and wacky girl. Call them “Maiden” or “Aldub”, the social-media-driven phenomenon started on Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye, when then-Yaya Dub reacted to the Kapuso actor’s distinctive smile (and his signature dimple, too). The rest, as they say, became history. Despite persistent rumors and pressure from fans, Maine clarified late last year that she and Richards are friends.
Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla
Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, collectively called “KathNiel,” first rose to fame in 2011 in the show “Growing Up” and they have been inseparable since. Their television dramas “Princess and I” and “Got to Believe” as well as movies “24/7 in Love” “Pagpag” propelled the pair further into teen celebrity royalty. The two are tackling more mature roles nowadays, with Barcelona: A Love Untold and La Luna Sangre. After years of persistent dating rumors, the two confirmed that they are in a relationship as of March 2017.
Nadine Lustre and James Reid
Nadine Lustre and James Reid’s team up was hyped from the very moment they were introduced to the public. Not only were they familiar faces (Lustre as a child actress and singer while James Reid as the Big Winner of Pinoy Big Brother), they were also headlining a movie project together as a new love team. “Diary ng Panget” was followed by more box office successes such as “Talk Back and You’re Dead,” “Para Sa Hopeless Romantic,” and “Beauty and the Bestie.” Their television drama, “On The Wings of Love,” made Nadine and James household names in the local entertainment industry. Just like Kathniel, the two confirmed they are “officially JaDine” in their February concert in 2018.
