Filipinos love to have a bit of romance every once in a while, even if it’s just from a fictional couple and their love story on the big screen. All those slow-motion, kilig scenes can make an entire crowd swoon without fail (Got 2 Believe and One More Chance, anyone?)

While romantic movies are sure blockbusters (and money-makers), they’re always bound to get cheesy. We’re not complaining, though because, to be honest, these lines make for a memorable movie experience. There’ll always be that one cheesy, romantic movie we’d watch hundreds of times because we liked the way it made us feel.

Wondering how Filipinos romantic movies fared in the cheesy-ometer (We don’t even know if the dictionary recognizes this word)? Here are some of the cheesiest and most popular lines we had in mind:

(Kahit Isang Saglit)

Falling in love with a close colleague (one of them in a relationship) is always bound to be complicated but we always thought that Michael (Piolo Pascual) and Annie (Judy Ann Santos) in Kahit Isang Saglit were meant to be together. Michael’s confession scene remains one of the most intense (and kinda cheesy) parts of the film. However, we knew that the confrontation was necessary to resolve their issues.

The scene: Michael and Annie are arguing about the former’s plan to leave the architecture firm they worked so hard to build. He then kisses her.

Michael: ‘Yan.

While we all fell head-over-heels with Aga Muhlach’s old love letter to Lea Salonga, we also smiled and wept over Agnes (Lea) and Jerry (Aga) their love story in the iconic movie Sana Maulit Muli. They portrayed an enduring love despite changes and challenges. We also love how they call each other babes, no matter how intense the moment was.

The scene: Agnes and Jerry have accepted the changes that distance brought into their relationship. Agnes proposes marriage while Jerry says he’s going back to the Philippines. While it pains him to leave, he has to.

Jerry: Kailangan eh.

3. “She had me at my worst. You had me at my best at binalewala mo lang lahat ‘yun and you chose to break my heart.” (One More Chance)

Hearing the name Popoy (John Lloyd Cruz) and Basha (Bea Alonzo) alone brings back the tears we once shed for the couple. At many points throughout the film, it also had us at our best and saw us at our worst.

The scene: Popoy seems to have moved on from the painful breakup with Bea. However, upon realizing that she still loves Popoy and seeing him with another person hurts, Basha comes back to him expressing her honest feelings.

Popoy: She had me at my worst. You had me at my best at binalewala mo lang lahat ‘yun and you chose to break my heart.

(Ngayong Nandito Ka)

We’ll always look at the Kristine Hermosa-Jericho Rosales pair and remember “Pangako Sa’yo,” but they also displayed great acting in Ngayong Nandito Ka. Technically, Garrie (Kristine) is already engaged and unavailable when she and Rocky (Jericho) met after being two years apart. Love crept in, however, on (and off) the screen. It’s too sad they parted ways, despite their cheesiest line in the movie.

The scene: Garrie and Rocky just met after two long years apart. Garrie, who thought Rocky married the daughter of a wealthy family to save their family business (he didn’t), has tried to move on and is already engaged to another man. They both realize, however, that their love for each other never truly died.

(My Amnesia Girl)

There’s nothing more cheesy than this pick-up line-filled movie. My Amnesia Girl was literally a melting pot of the cheesiest dialogues in any romantic film. It’s the highest grossing film of 2010, however, so that confirms that people are not complaining (and so are we).

Photo from Star Cinema
The scene: Apollo (John Lloyd Cruz) pulls one of the many pick-up lines in the movie on Irene (Toni Gonzaga). He asks why someone is searching for a person. She guesses it’s because that it’s because he/she likes the person. He then says it’s because the person is missing. Confused, Irene asks if she’s missing.

6. “Mahal mo ba ako dahil kailangan mo ako o kailangan mo ako kaya mahal mo ako?” (Milan)

Milan was shot in the beautiful country of Italy and was once the setting of a Piolo Pascual-Claudine Barretto movie team-up. It was a sure blockbuster and yes, this movie was famous for the one question we’ve probably asked once at one point in our life, especially when we found ourselves in a complicated relationship. *criesinthecorner*

Photo from Star Cinema

The scene: While looking for his wife in Milan, Lino (Piolo) meets Jenny (Claudine) and they soon fall in love with each other. They both know, however, that the kind of love they have is not right, at least at the moment. Lino confesses his love anyway.

Jenny: Mahal mo ba ako dahil kailangan mo ako? Oh kailangan mo ako kaya mahal mo ako?

7. “And I’m so stupid for making the biggest mistake of falling in love with my best friend…” (Labs Kita… Okay Ka Lang?)

It would be a big mistake to dismiss this movie form your must-watch romantic movies, just like how Bujoy (Jolina Magdangal) made the stupid mistake of falling in love with her best friend, Ned (Marvin Agustin). Maybe it’s not so stupid, after all?

Photo from Star Cinema

The scene: Bujoy has been either mad or oblivious of Ned and it’s because she’s realizing that he can never be more than just a friend (or maybe not.)

Bujoy: Yes kaibigan mo ko. Kaibigan mo LANG ako and that’s all I ever was to you Ned, your best friend. And I’m so stupid for making the biggest mistake of falling in love with my best friend dahil kahit kailan hindi mo naman ako makikita eh.

Which of these pass as the cheesiest line for you?
