Sometimes, speaking up for ourselves, pursuing that one dream that seems impossible, or accepting who we are can be very daunting. We feel as though we are not good enough to deserve what we want and worked hard for.

For days when we feel less fierce and feisty than usual, there’s definitely a song that can help free the lion living secretly inside your heart.

Need a little push of courage? Here are some songs that make us brave:

1. “Defying Gravity” (from Wicked)

It’s time to try defying gravity
I think I’ll try defying gravity
And you can’t pull me down!

This piece from Broadway’s Wicked is a classic for a good reason. The song’s message of determination combined with Idina Menzel’s powerful vocals both empower and uplift listeners (including us). Defying gravity seems like a lot of work but when we put our mind into doing it, no one can pull us down.

2. “Try” by Colbie Caillat

You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to bend until you break
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don’t have to change a single thing

Pleasing everybody and conforming to standards have become a fact of life for lot of people, but guess what? It doesn’t have to be. After all, only you get to live your life, so accept your imperfections and choose what makes you happy. We know you don’t want to settle for less. However, as Colbie Caillat sang, you don’t have to bend until you break.

3. “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten

Starting right now I’ll be strong
I’ll play my fight song
And I don’t really care if nobody else believes
‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me

This is the song that’ll urge you to finally flee from a life dictated by others. It comes on automatically when we feel like we’ve had enough of holding back and staying silent. The heavy drum beats and vocals makes us gather every bit of fight left in us. If you ever need a fight song, Rachel Platten’s is already yours.

4. “Brave” by Sara Bareilles

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly, I wanna see you be brave

The awesome Sara Bareilles wants to see us brave and she starts off by listing (or singing) down the kind of person we can be. We can choose to be passive but ultimately, we can start expressing what we truly feel and think.

5. “Roar” by Katy Perry

You held me down, but I got up
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, your hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up
Get ready ’cause I had enough
I see it all, I see it now

Katy Perry herself  was “sick of keeping all these feelings inside and not speaking up for myself.” This is why writing the song easily came out as a  “‘pick yourself up and dust yourself off and keep going’, female-empowerment song.” Sometimes, speaking isn’t the best way to get the message across. Making a statement does.

6. “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera

I am beautiful
No matter what they say
Words can’t bring me down
I am beautiful
In every single way
Yes, words can’t bring me down

The world has all sorts of definition of what’s beautiful and our brain is wired to believe them. This is why we often feel like we’re too much of everything: too skinny, too fat, too dark, too pale, too short, or too tall. No matter what other say, however, what’s important is how we see ourselves. When we start seeing our self-worth, words can’t and won’t bring us down (just like Christina Aguilera’s soulful voice).

7. “The Voice Within” by Christina Aguilera

When there’s no one else, look inside yourself
Like your oldest friend, just trust the voice within
Then you’ll find the strength that will guide your way
You’ll learn to begin to trust the voice within

If it’s still not obvious, Christina Aguilera has a lot of empowering songs in her arsenal. Most of the time, we are our strongest critic. We beat ourselves up over the smallest mistakes and we’re left without the help of a friend. The song encourages everyone to listen to the voice within because more often than not, it reveals the truth about the strength we hold inside.

8. “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga

I’m beautiful in my way
‘Cause God makes no mistakes
I’m on the right track, baby I was born this way

Lady Gaga represents unique artistry and coming out with a song where she owns her eccentric identity is truly inspiring. We are all different yet beautiful just like she is. We were born this way and it’s okay to embrace it.

9. “Let It Go” (from Frozen)

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door

We can all relate with how Elsa tried to keep her icy powers from doing any harm to her loved ones and the kingdom. She was often misunderstood because of it. Little did she know that the power she thought was a danger can actually do beautiful things. If you ever find yourself in the same situation, maybe you’re better off letting go of your fear and start using your gift to do something great.

10. “This Is Me” (from The Greatest Showman)

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me

“The Greatest Showman” gathered some of the most distinctive characters to take the audience by storm, especially with the statement-making song, “This Is Me.” (Yes, we’ve already included this song in our other playlist, we love it THAT much!) We think the most important lesson we can all learn from the song is this: What makes you different makes you shine the most. You are brave. You are bruised but this is who you are meant to be.
