Yes, you have (or are about to have) that college diploma and degree that you have longed for four years (or more). But what’s the next step for you? Is studying day and night just to pass your exams and thesis enough to land you in a good position at the job of your dreams?
We’ve all been there at that point where you don’t know where you’ll land, which career path to take, and how to make the most out of your degree. It’s a normal thing to have pre-working stage jitters. But fear not because MB Life is here to help you out with the must-haves prior to chasing after that dream job.
To lessen the thoughts about your unforeseen future, here’s what you’ll need:
Basics: Requirements galore
It’s normal to not know where to start but every journey starts with a single step, so here’s step one: Secure all your requirements as soon as possible. That’s the most basic and not-so-complicated part of your future.
After job interviews, it would be best if you already have the basic requirements that companies need, especially if you’re checking out job fairs where HR staff do on-the-spot hiring.
Here’s a checklist:
Use the proper photos
No, that selfie in your social media page won’t work…and that graduation picture that was taken four years ago is quite misleading (if you’re not a fresh grad anymore). Make sure that your photo is as pleasing as you are.
While it’s true that looks shouldn’t matter if your credentials say so much more about you, your future employer will still be seeing your application first…and first impressions matter!
If you don’t want to spend money in having your photo taken at a Rush I.D. Studio, then at least take your photo against a plain white background in a nice-looking collared shirt that looks like something you would wear to work.
Treat the job search like love
You’ll be rejected multiple times before the perfect job finds you (or rather, accepts you). Work, like love, is a two-way street and your resume is the way to profess your endearment to the company. It’s a matter of time if they decide to let you in their life or not. Patience, though. The best ones take time to make up their mind.
When applying, also put into consideration if that’s a job which you can commit to for a long-time relationship. While it’s true that it takes a couple of job hunts or job experiences before you finally land in a career you’ll have for the rest of your life, do yourself a favor and be in a place where you’ll actually enjoy.
Fun fact: Here’s an additional reason you’ll love. Did you know that…
Make up your mind
Before joining the hustle and bustle of the workplace, make sure that you are already 101 percent ready to work, work, work, work, work and strut your way to job like Rihanna.
A friendly reminder: Vacation leave credits are only limited. School and work are not the same.
Begin the search
If you’re all set, then it’s time to begin the job hunt!
Don’t be scared to send your resume to different companies. Do a bit of soul-searching. You’d be surprised at the vast choices you’ll be considering.
Check out Manila Bulletin’s Classified Job Fair 2016 at the Trinoma Activity Center from April 12 to 13. Lots of employers await you and your skill set. Who knows, your forever (career) might be waiting for you there! It will be open from 10 am to 6 pm on both days.
See you there!
