Because it’s International Women’s Day. That’s why!

On Wednesday (March 9, Philippine time), the Twitter world was greeted by an invitation from Harry Potter star Emma Watson to look outside their windows at dusk (for those living in New York City).

Since we won’t see the spectacular sight referred to by our favorite feminist actress, here’s a peak at what’s happening at the other side of the world which is still celebrating International Women’s Day.

The color illuminated the skyline of the Big Apple that night, making both men and women stop to stare at the magnificent color of the 102-storey skyscraper.

According to the Empire State Bldg Twitter account, the color was more of a bright magenta – to be more specific.

Emma, known for her continuous support for women empowerment through the HeForShe campaign, joined the First Lady of New York City Chirlaine McCray in hitting the switch of the world-famous building to join in the celebration of Women’s Day worldwide.

The 25-year-old actress is an active United Nations Women advocate who pushes for gender equality. As the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, she is joining the struggle to unite the world through the HeForShe movement wherein people are invited to step up and be the “he” for “she.”

In other parts of the world, celebrities also joined in the #IWD2016 celebration on Twitter by sending out empowering messages through their respective social media accounts. Here are some of the most retweeted ones:

Women should not just be celebrated for one day. They should be cherished for weeks, months, years, and up to a lifetime. Nonetheless, happy International Women’s Day to the ladies out there!
