Even the ruined and abandoned have its beauty.
The remnants of an old luxurious resort in the ’90s are the only “structure” you can find in Fortune Island, an island once owned by former Batangas governor José Antonio Leviste. Now, this edifice of a long gone resort is what made the island even more special.
Before everything else, you should be aware that the island has no source of electricity and water. There are no comfort rooms, very limited source of shade, not to mention the scorching heat are just some of the many inconveniences you have to bear;but the adventure, the scenery and the experience will make it all worthwhile. After all, it is summer and everyone wants a piece of the adventure.
Reaching the island is not that hard; there are several routes to take for travelers all over the country.
One way is to go to the Coastal Mall Bus Terminal and look for a bus (ordinary or air-conditioned) that is headed for Calatagan, Batangas. There are other terminals located in Cubao and Buendia that travel to Batangas, you can take whatever is easier for you. Aside from these terminals, there are also passenger vans that are headed that way. Travel time depends highly on the level of traffic but usually the ride lasts from 2-3 hours.
Ask the driver to drop you off at Nasugbu Town proper. Once you’re there, you can ride a jeepney or a tricycle to the coast of Nasugbu.
If you’re traveling using a private vehicle, you can take the Kaybiang Tunnel that connects Ternate, Cavite to Nasugbu, Batangas. This will make your travel time an hour shorter.
Once you’re there, ask the townspeople about available boat rides. Usually, these rides range from P3,000 to P7, 000 depending on the number of the passengers and the boat you want to take. You can bargain and canvass the places to get a cheaper transport but always remember that SAFETY IS PRIORITY. There are times when the waves are unforgiving, hitting the boat as hard as it can.
Once you’ve secured a boat, it will take about one hour or two to get to Fortune Island. You can tell the boat operator to either wait until you leave (if you’re only there for a day trip) or they can just return the next day. Since the boat ride is an hour long, you can just enjoy the relaxing view and contemplate about life. (That’s what I did!)
Welcome to Fortune Island!
From afar, the island seemed like any other island. At first glance nothing about it seems special. However, the moment your boat gets nearer, you’ll easily notice the cooler breeze, the different hues of blue and the Greek architecture-inspired ruins similar to that of Parthenon in Greece.
Once you leave the boat, you will be welcomed by the cool, clear water of the sea. Be mindful as these waves get stronger from time to time. The beach has semi-fine white sand running all over the island.
Explore and experience
To be honest, there isn’t much to do in Fortune Island but the limited activities it has provide unlimited fun.
The island offers numerous scenic sites, waiting to be your next profile picture. Strike a pose at the shore, go up to the ruins . As long as your device has memory, take all the photos and videos that you want.
If you’re more of the “appreciate-what’s-in-front-of-you” type, take a walk and seek the ends of the island. You can also take a hike up to the lighthouse atop the mountain, there is not much to see there, though.
The waves are huge and strong, perfect for those who’d like to go surfing. There are spots with calmer waves that are suitable for swimming and snorkeling. The island’s clear water shows the vast coral and marine life.
If you’re up for an adrenaline rush, there is a diving spot in the island that offers a mildly challenging jump. The spot has three different levels that drops to a secluded portion of the beach. If you think the jump is challenging, wait until you see the steep path to the cliff.
Once you make it up to the jump-off point, leave your fears behind and jump to the water. Let the waves welcome you and remove the heat from your body. The jump is not that dangerous, but be mindful of the waves since there are times where it is stronger than usual. Other than that, everything is safe as long as you know how to swim.
There are a lot of activities you can do in the island, you can just camp out with friends and enjoy a night under the stars while the lullaby of the sea sings you to sleep. It doesn’t really matter what you do, as long as you enjoy the company you are with.
Fortune Island is easy to reach, make sure you get a chance to visit it this summer. Not only is it affordable, its beauty is unlike any other.
