It’s only Monday but who says we can’t make plans already?
If we may suggest a hump day Wednesday agenda: Swing by Alamat on Don Pedro St., in Poblacion for the free screening The Search for Weng Weng. It’s a documentary by Australian filmmaker Andrew Leavold about well, Weng Weng, the 2’9” stuntman who later became known as the Filipino James Bond.
The movie was shot in the course of seven years, with Leavold flying in and out of the country in search of and to research about the life of Weng Weng. The movie, of course, goes over and beyond the action star, straying towards the history of Filipino B-movies and onto our country’s “Second Golden Age” of cinema.
How does an Australian come into play, you may ask? Well, Leavold used to own Thrash Video, a video store specializing in B-movies. He got wind of Weng Weng movies and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Search for Weng Weng first launched in Metro Manila in 2013 and has been making the rounds in cinema since then.
The free screening should be more than enough reason to check out Poblacion’s latest haunt. Alamat has a beautiful and wide-ranging selection of local craft beers, not to mention delicious and ingenious Filipino pica-pica.
It’s at Poblacion, too, which is where Ringside is, in case the movie jumpstarts a fixation on um, small people.
