Hooray! A new record store opens today, October 24 in Legazpi Village in Makati.

Oh, but a double hooray: The aforementioned record store is owned by Toti Dalmacion, chief of Terno Recordings, himself a renowned record collector.

He’s actually reprising a role he once held. Back in the 90’s, Toti opened and operated Groove Nation, a small below-the-radar record store at a rooftop in Makati that soon enough became a tambayan for DJs, musicians, and all of them music geeks.

Fast forward to present and Toti is back at it again with This is Pop Records, a record store specializing in pre-loved indie pop, electronic, new wave, experimental records. They sell, but they also buy records.

If you’re familiar with Toti, or Terno Recordings for that matter, you can expect This is Pop Records not to carry the usual pop releases that you’ll find in the usual record stores, anyway. This is Pop, Toti says, also won’t have OPM releases too, because “it was never really my speciality.”

Instead, he’ll work with what he knows best. Think: Cool, obscure music. Toti is a long-time collector, who often goes on buying trips abroad, you can be assured that the records available in This is Pop come from any of his highly trusted sources from around the world.

While it’s easy to think that genre is the most special thing about This is Pop — finally, obscure Deutsche artists and hard-to-find presses in Manila! — allow us to refute you and say sorry! It is not.

The most special thing about This is Pop Records is its operation hours: There are none.

You can find the record store, located at the ground floor of Legazpi Tower 100, say, open on a Sunday but not on a Tuesday; or maybe on a Monday like today, but not on a Saturday. It really all depends. “Kaya you have to follow This is Pop Records on Instagram,” Toti urged. “That’s where I’ll update followers of the operation hours, or if the store is opened that day or not.”

Quirky, isn’t it?

And a quick tip: According to Pulse Radio, This is Pop Records was named after a song, “This is Pop” by the British new wave band XTC released in 1978.

Doors open today at 2pm.

This is Pop Records, Unit B, Ground Floor, Legaspi Tower 100, 148 Legazpi Street, Legazpi Village, Makati.
