Here’s a piece of good news for all of you who missed out on seeing a female actress play national artist Apolinario Mabini the first two times: The steampunk musical Mabining Mandirigma is back for its third run on the first three weekends of December.
But first: What’s a steampunk musical, you may ask. It’s a branch of speculative fiction usually set in an anachronistic Victorian alternate history setting. A few fine examples would be Final Fantasy, Hell Boy, Sky Captain, and well Mabining Mandirigma.
Mabining Mandirigma will run four times for every weekend, with Saturdays getting a matinee at 3pm in addition to the usual 8pm that Fridays and Sundays get.
Mabining Mandirigma, aka the Gentle Hero, is a modern musical conceptualized by Tanghalang Pilipino to celebrate the 150th birthday of the national hero.
While the musical explores the essence of the word ‘mabini,’ it also reveals the hero’s militancy.
The Dec 2 show time (8pm) will be presented by the Philippine Italian Association and will feature Filipino actress and associate artistic director of Tanghalang Pilipino Liesl Batucan as Apolinario Mabini.
A huge success during its first two runs, the musical earned phenomenal acclaim among critics here and abroad. Written by Nicanor Tiongson and directed by Chris Millado, Mabining Mandirigma earned 12 out of 13 awards at the Gawad Buhay Awards in 2015.
Dec 2-4, Dec 9-11, Dec 16-18. Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP Little Theater, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay. Ticketworld.
