It was a tight game with nine deadlocks and 21 lead changes with the biggest lead by either side at six points.

But in the end, the Ateneo Blue Eagles prevailed against the FEU Tamaraws, 69-68 in overtime, making the ‘dream finals’ versus bitter rivals De La Salle Green Archers happen.

“Ateneo could’ve won the game outright in regulation but [FEU’s Ron] Dennison converted a running shot with 37.8 seconds to play in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 66,” writes Reuben Terrado on SPIN.ph.

Ateneo’s Vince Tolentino scored one of two free throws before Dennison scored a basket to give FEU 68-67 lead.

And then Ateneo, courtesy of a bloodied Isaac Go, scored its only field goal—the winning shot—in extra time. He also happened to run across the court right after scoring to distract Dennison, causing him to miss the game clock.

But while Ateneo forging a ‘dream finals’ against DLSU is the big story of the day, Ateneo’s Blue Babble Battalion’s performance also took the attention—and applause—of the crowd.

Eight members of the Ateneo Blue Babble Battlion took off their jackets, revealing black undershirts, which collectively spelled “Not a hero,” the popular catchphrase among protesters in the days following the controversial burial of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The game coincides with the third and biggest protest yet against the Marcos burial happening on at the People Power Monument on EDSA. As of 8pm on Wednesday night, the crowd is estimated to be at 20,000-strong.

The ‘dream finals’ starts on Saturday, Dec 3 at SM Mall of Asia Arena.
