For some years now, Makati and Bonifacio Global City have had the monopoly on the speakeasy bar drinkers’ attention—think Prohibition, Exit Bar, Bank Bar, and the recently opened Hotel Bar inside Pink’s.

But Pasig’s Kapitolyo neighborhood is ready to join the fray. Newly opened RM 16, adjacent to Titto’s Latin BBQ and Brews, on East Capitol Drive is the neighborhood’s very first speakeasy.

It’s called RM 16 because its address is #16 East Capitol Drive

RM 16 hides behind a vintage Coca Cola fridge door, behind Titto’s, a joint that serves Fil-Mex cuisine, with beef belly, sisig, and fish street tacos, squid ink, chorizo and seafood-studded paella, and value-for-money Lomo Saltado, or tenderloin steak. Horchata and various Agua Fresca juice concoctions are in the menu, together with sangria and various beers.

You may then amble over to RM 16, where on most days it is refreshingly quiet, true to the speakeasy vibe, with Paris cafe jazz, languid Billie Holiday and Nina Simone playing in the background.

Design elements inside RM 16 will remind you of the steel bars of the Paris Eiffel Tower, while tungsten bulbs and contrast lighting against the bar enhance its subdued atmosphere. On Fridays and Saturdays, it gets loud and energetic.

Bar drink pricing is friendly to the neighborhood, and it’ll take less than P300 to get you a fetching drink from the counter.

RM 16’s Peruvian Sour combines lime and passionfruit to make their version of the Pisco Sour, while the Querida Rita is a Tequila-Cointreau mixer with green mango and another dash of lime.

Those who fancy a dessert drink will like the Coquito, which has a chocolate bitters flavor base, rum, coconut milk, and a dollop of vanilla ice cream in a cone.

The fruity red sangria is always a “safe” choice for cocktails, if you want your red wine, white wine, brandy and vodka all in one, though invoking the “Make Me Anything” card will get you one as well. Just tell the bartender how you feel; “Anything” will cost you P250.

RM 16 can be accessed via the aforementioned special vintage Coca Cola fridge door, with the passkey provided to you, says Anton Melocoton, one of the bar’s owners. Already they are thinking of providing the code to loyal customers via weekly SMS.
