Because we are the host country and the title holder, Malacañang had to release an official statement to express their utmost support to the Miss Universe pageant.
The palace posted its full statement last Jan 28. And the horror. See below:
“We convey our most heartfelt felicitations for all the Miss Universe candidates, and especially cheer and throw our support for the Miss Philippines candidate Maxine Medina who deserves all the moral boost she can get for working very hard and giving her best in a competition that promotes goodwill and friendship among nations.
“As the country’s representative, Maxine is able to show the beauty, warmth, hope, and dignity of the Filipino. We are truly proud of her.
“We are grateful for this honor of hosting the pageant, assured and confident that the 2016 Miss Universe experience has been joyful and memorable for all the candidates and our foreign guests.
“We invite them to come back and bring more of their friends to explore the various islands of the Philippines, ready to be astonished at the unexhausted beauty of each one, willing to be moved in every way by the fervent spirit of the Filipino people. Mabuhay!”
We stopped at felicitations. We mean, really?
So we are thankful to a good-hearted girl, Anj Pessumal, who took it upon herself to edit the poorly written copy.
She tweeted a photo of the statement together with a red ballpen and captioned it “Ano guys.”
Following the tweet is the edited version of the statement with a hashtag #MalacanangPlsHireMe. On her post on Facebook, Pessumal said that editing this “badly written” Malacañang press release just goes to show how problematic the government’s Communications team is.
Her edited copy reads:
We would like to express our most heartfelt greetings, to all the Miss Universe candidates and especially cheer and extend our support for the Miss Philippines candidate, Miss Maxine Medina, for working very hard and giving her best in a competition that promotes goodwill and friendship among nations.
As the country’s representative, Maxine has been able to show the beauty, warmth, hope and dignity of the Filipino. We are truly proud of her.
We are grateful for the opportunity to host the pageant, and we are also assured and confident that the 2016 Miss Universe pageant has been a joyful and memorable experience for all the candidates and our foreign guests.
We would like to extend an invitation to our guests to return and explore the various destinations of the Philippines, to appreciate the beauty of the islands, and be moved in every way by the fervent spirit of the Filipino people.”
The said tweet was retweeted 1,300 times and liked 4,700 times. Woah!
Malacañang, please hire this lady. Not only is she a great communicator, she’s also full of initiative and knows how to work social media—exactly the kind of person you need in your staff.
