With a relationship withstanding the changes of time, the rule of 15 presidents in the Philippines, and even the transition of photos from black and white to colored, the Philippines has seen their majesties from Japan both in their Crown Prince and Princess days up to their current Emperor and Empress status.

Japan’s imperial couple Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko is back for a second time in the country to mark the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations with Japan.

The royal couple previously set foot in the Philippines 53 years ago, specifically in November 1962, when they were still Japan’s Crown Prince and Princess.

Here’s a look at the two honored guests’ stay in the country, then and now:
