Oh hey, looks like people are doing an about-face on the old belief that oil is bad for your skin. Because guess what, it seems like it isn’t so bad after all.
Oil cleansing method is slowly gaining popularity. More and more people are giving up soap—or at the very least adding oil to their skincare regime. And because it’s on the rise, an FAQ.
What is oil cleansing method?
Oil cleansing method is simply adding oil to clean your skin.
Why, is soap not enough?
That that soap is not enough. It’s just that sometimes, soap is too good at removing dirt, oil and bacteria that it strips away too much. This forces our skin to produce more oil, disrupts its balance and invite more bacteria than before, making our skin worse!
There are many ways to interpret that, but one of the simplest comes from Dr. Kaycee Reyes of Manila Bulletin: “massage the oil on your face for about two minutes, place a hot wash cloth over your face for 10 seconds, and then wipe away.”
How often do we have to do this?
Once a day, preferably at night and you get naturally clear skin.
What oil should we use?
First you must know that there are two types of oil: Base oils and essential oils.
Essential oils are pretty strong, come aplenty, and each loaded with benefits depend on your skin’s needs. But because they’re all strong, you will need base oils to dissolve whatever essential oil you’ve chosen.
It’s the base oil that you need to be smarter with as each skin type has its own needs and requirements. Off the bat, jojoba oil is good for all skin types.
In any case: For oily skin, Dr. Reyes recommends safflower oil, primrose oil, sunflower oil, and hemp seed oil.
For dry skin, it’s almond oil, avocado oil, and argan oil.
How do you mix the two oils?
There should be more of your base oil in the mix. A few drops of the essential oil into your base oil and you’re good to go. “Mix your ratios for two weeks until you find the right oil for you,” recommends Dr. Reyes.
Is this for real?
Yeah, it’s for real! Remember: oil dissolves oil. Putting oil on your face doesn’t mean it sits there to make your face shine. Especially when you’re using the right oil, it can actually attract deep-seated dirt and bacteria effectively without stripping off your own skin’s oil or disrupt its balance. That’s what makes the oil cleansing method so good!
