No better way to launch a theater season than with an opening scene in…heaven, with the devil gambling with God.
Which is exactly how Dulaang UP opened its 41st theater season; it opened with Rody Vera’s adaptation of Faust, and with the play’s opening scene in heaven where the devil, Mephisto, gambles with God that he can corrupt his most virtuous servant FAUST.
It is about a series of events that questions our preconceived notions of justice, rationality, and morality.
Faust is directed by José Estrella together with the artistic team led by Sir Anril Tiatco, Jem Javier, and Bryan Viray for the dramaturgy, Barbie Tan-Tiongco for the lights, Carlo Pagunaling for costume, Ed Lacson for the set design, JM Cabling for choreography and Jon Lazam for sounds.
Neil Sese and Jack Yabut alternate in the title role of Faust while Paolo O’Hara and Mailes Kanapi as Mephisto—a cultivated, witty and cynical servant from hell. Karen Gaerlan on the other hand plays the innocent role of Gretchen who is transformed into a tragic heroine as the play develops.
Faust problematizes the entanglement of religion, morality, and folk narratives. It is part of Dulaang UP’s participation in Salaysayan: K’wentong Bayan, Kaalamang Bayan and National Arts Month in February.
The play runs until Mar 5 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theatre, Palma Hall, UP Diliman, Quezon City. The remaining performance dates are: February 22, 23, 24, 28, March 1, 2, 3, 7:00pm and February 25, 26, March 4 and 5 10:00am and 3:00pm.
