Full disclosure: We’re huge fans of Lea Salonga.
We enjoy seeing her on TV, we love hearing her sing, but let’s admit it, watching her on the theater stage is the Lea experience of them all.
So can you imagine how ecstatic we are when we heard about the Tony award-winning musical Fun Home getting a rerun?! Yay!
Fun Home is based on Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir, adapted into musical by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori. It shows Alison discovering her own sexuality and coming out as a lesbian.
Lea plays the role of Helen Bechdel, wife to a gay husband Bruce (Eric Kunze) and mother to the lesbian protagonist Alison (Cris Villonco, Katie Bradshaw and Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante).
According to Manila Bulletin, the award-winning theater actress fell in love with the musical when she watched the run on Broadway. Director of the Manila production, Bobby Garcia advised her to watch the musical to see if she would consider doing the role of Helen played by Judy Kuhn.
“Our paths as artists have crossed multiple times. We were nominated in the same category, we worked on the same stage for the 10th anniversary of ‘Les Misérables.’ She replaced me in ‘Les Misérables’ after I left as Fantine. Getting to watch her, I’ve always been a great fan of hers,” Lea said.
She also said that being able to play the role of Helen is one of the most fulfilling experiences that she had as an artist.
“It was very cathartic to be able to just do that every night. It’s, like, I’ve been waiting for my whole career to do something like this. It doesn’t come often, so when they do happen to you, you got to grab it and run with it. It’s been one of the most fulfilling experiences that I had as an artist. I am identified primarily as a singer. So, to have an opportunity to just work hard as an actor and let the singing come secondary to that, it’s just so fulfilling,” she said.
Fun Home will run from March 10 to 19 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium at RCBC Plaza in Makati. Produced by Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment.
