After Stephanie Retuya, Jodilly Pendre, Monika Sta. Maria, and Katarina Rodriguez gave us a good dose of #PinoyPride, three Filipina models will compete to be the next Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5.
Jennica Sanchez, Maureen Wroblewitz, and Anjelica Santillan, are competing against 11 contestants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
The show is based on the American franchise America’s Next Top Model created by supermodel Tyra Banks. Filipino models did well in the past cycles but never won the title. That’s why this cycle’s contenders are more eager to get the title.
“We always tell each other na dapat isa sa amin maging first Filipina to win the competition,” Jennica said.
“That’s why we motivate each other,” Anjelica said. “Since wala pang nananalo sa Philippines, this season gusto talaga naming i-uwi ’yung title.”
“We have to support each other because we are all Filipinas but at the end of the day, it’s still a competition. We still have to do the competition and do the challenges and think of ourselves,” Maureen said.
Maureen grew-up in Saudi Arabia and Germany, and now pursuing her modeling career.
“I always have a passion for modeling and acting so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to go to the Philippines and also because my dad lives here. I moved to my dad and I’ve always felt of Philippines as my home,” Maureen said.
The 20-year-old, Jennica, on the other hand, used to be a blogger and already has quite a following on Instagram where she has more than 79,000 followers.
“Masaya kasi thousands of girls auditioned tapos isa ako sa kanila na mapasali sa 14. Ang dami nagsasabi sa akin na ‘Sali ka diyan.’ Kasi wala pang nananalo na Pinay, so I want to be the first ever Filipino winner sa ‘Asia’s Next Top Model,’” she said.
Anjelica, who also loves wakeboarding and other extreme sports, has been modeling for four years.
When asked about the judges, she said that Cindy Bishop is the toughest. “She knows talaga ano gusto niya from you so you have to deliver what she wants,” she said.
Judging this season is AsNTM’s host Cindy Bishop, model Cara G McIlroy, celebrity and fashion photographer Yu Tsai, and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach.
When asked about Pia, Anjelica said, “She’s really nice and nagbibigay siya ng advice to you about the competition since she’s been in a competition before.”
Maureen said Pia gives them practical tips, especially for photo shoots.
Given the fact that Jennica is shorter compared to other contestants, she became more motivated when Pia told her she wasn’t the tallest but was named Miss Universe.
“Sobrang bait niya sa aming lahat. Walang bias sa aming Filipina. As in lahat, pantay-pantay. Lagi niya akong pinagtatanggol doon, Ako kasi ’yung isa sa pinakamaliit doon. And then she told me na ‘I’m not the tallest in Miss Universe pero ako ’yung nanalo.’ That gave me motivation,” she said.
