Repertory Philippines’ current offering In The Next Room: The Vibratory Play is a highly entertaining, super stimulating play set in 19th Century-New York where marriage did not mean intimacy. It was a time when there really are doctors treating patients with a medical mechanism that we now know as…the vibrator.

The play talks about sex and orgasm, but consider those mere click baits; underneath the surface are important issues and lessons about marriage, having children and losing children, love, and all that jazz. It was originally written in 2009 by American playwright Sara Ruhl and beautifully translated on Repertory Philippines stage by director Chris Millado.

The play will only be on stage until Sunday, April 23, and we highly encourage you to catch it. It’s refresh, it’s smart, it’s very inspired, and it’s got heart. After seeing it two weeks ago, we immediately thought of different people we want to recommend this to as well as different scenarios of a good weekend that In The Next Room can replace.

1. An all-girl weekend. Instead of the usual Sunday brunch or another one of your Saturday nights out, lend your group some culture and suggest to catch the play instead. Lots of giggles here, promise—possibly more than that mimosa you’ve been having for brunch!

2. A date night for engaged couples. Apart from the naughty nature of the show, the play offers a ton load of lessons about marriage, sex, children, and motherhood. To say it’s comparable to a pre-Cana seminar is an exaggeration but really, there is so much you can learn from In The Next Room!

3. In lieu of a bachelorette party. Apart from the same thrills that the usual hen party offers, In The Next Room also has nuggets of wisdom to impart a bride in her upcoming new life as a wife. Arrange for a matinee!

4. For long-term couples on their date nights. In The Next Room is a play about, well, short of the long, it’s a play about the importance of sex and orgasms, especially in marriage.

The story revolves around Dr. Givings treating patients who suffer from hysteria with a tool/machine that we now know as the vibrator. Often, his patients are unsatisfied women who don’t get it on with their husbands; it is Dr. Giving who gives them orgasm and restores them back to their health. The irony is, Mrs. Givings is terribly lonely and unsatisfied, much like her husband’s patients.

While it seems silly and kinky, the second half of the play drips with wisdom and hard truths that couples—especially those in the long-term—will most benefit from.

5. For a stimulating afternoon. No matter who you are, where you’re from, and before we start singing the song (trololo), allow us to say: In the Next Room is for everyone over 18 years old. It’s smart, it’s funny, it will make you think, and most importantly, there’s heart to it. It’s more stimulating than an afternoon of malling or a two-hour chikahan portion with your friends. We’d wager that chikahan with your friends would be much better after seeing the play.
